Book club #2 met on Monday night at Damgoode Pies. It was delicious pizza, good draft beer, and lots of good discussion. There are five of us currently in that group, and we all brought two book suggestions for this year’s reading list. I am excited about the wide variety of books that we chose!
February--(Anna’s pick) Olive Kitterage, by Elizabeth Straut
March--(Laura’s pick) The Beautiful Miscellaneous, by Dominic Smith
April--( Amanda’s pick) American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld
May--(Jenn’s pick) The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson
June--(Amanda’s pick) Juliet, Naked, by Nick Hornby
July--(Eve’s pick) Lit, by Mary Karr
August--(Laura’s pick) The Bonfire of the Vanities, by Tom Wolfe
September--(Eve’s pick) This is Where I Leave You, by Jonathan Tropper
October--(Anna’s pick) Master of the Delta, by Thomas H. Cook
November--(Jenn’s pick) The Forgotten Garden, by Kate Morten
Book club #1 met last night at my parent’s house. Six of us talked about Free Range Kids. My parents cooked us an amazing dinner and sat in for part of the discussion. It was a fascinating discussion because it was my parents with 30+ years of parenting under their belts, a few of us with no kids, and a few parents of little kids. Everyone had his or her own ideas about the book and about real life parenting. It was especially fascinating for me because I want to be the kind of parent that is easy-going and not hovering all the time, but I am also a pretty paranoid scaredy cat about a lot of things. If I have kids I will have to work to find some sort of balance between protecting them too much and not enough. I guess that is what everyone wants, right?
We have a few books picked for the upcoming months in this book club, too. They are:
February—Lady Chatterly’s Lover by D.H. Lawrence
March—The Places in Between by Rory Stewart
April—The Night of the Gun by David Carr
Looks like I’ve got some reading to do! I guess this means Les Mis will be on the back burner for a while…

Hey, Eve! You are probably wondering who in the world I (Jennifer Ward Park) am....we went to Mount together in 9th grade and then I moved. You are my FB friend and I saw your post about book club picks, which leads me go this long, drawn out comment. But anyways, I am starting a book club with some friends and would love to hear how yours began and how you decide on books! Sounds like everybody picks one....?
Jennifer, we have done book club all different ways. This is our fourth year of meeting, and we have kindof changed as we went. We started out each picking a book. Now we choose a few months at a time while we are all together. That way people can veto books that have already been read, etc. We take turns hosting each month. Good luck with your book club! I have a list of all the books we have read in the past in an earlier post.
